The temple is a 14th- century architectural marvel built in 1303 AD by Madhava Dandanayaka, a chieftain serving under the Hoysala King Veera Ballala III. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this historic landmark seamlessly blends spiritual devotion with rich regional heritage. Azhagiya Manavalan, the revered deity of Srirangam, In 1323, during the month of March (Panguni festival). On the eighth day of Aadhi Brahmotsavam, accompanied by his consorts and under the guidance of the elderly Pillai Lokacharya, Azhagiya Manavalan and 52 devoted followers set out from Srirangam, heading southward, uncertain of their destination, with the sole objective of safeguarding Azhagiya Manavalan from the impending attack by Uluk Khan, later known as Mohammed bin Tughlaq. To avoid retribution from the invading army. During his exile, Azhagiya Manavalan resided in a cave on the northern slope of Anamalai hills, now known as Kodikulam. There, Pillai Lokacharya passed away. Concerned for Azhagiya Manavalan's safety, the group relocated to Thirumaliruncholai, Kozhikode in Kerala, and later to Thirukanambi in Karnataka. Azhagiya Manavalan was brought to Srirangam temple in 1371, as cited by Pillai Lokam Jeeyar in his magnum opus, Yatindra Pravana Prabhavam.
